Going to the show

Yes, the Edmonton Oilers are going to the Stanley Cup final. And yes, after beating the Anaheim Ducks last night, the fans flooded Whyte Avenue (my neighbourhood) and celebrated. And celebrated. And celebrated.

It made for a long night. I had to close my windows but that only slightly muffled the hooting and honking.

They do like their hockey here.

I think I finally got to sleep sometime after 2:30 a.m.

If they manage to win the Cup, I’ll likely have to move to West Kootenay in B.C. if I want to get any sleep.

But I’m not complaining. It’s really quite something seeing a city of some 1 million people experiencing a kind of shared hockey hysteria. I’ve lived in Toronto and Ottawa, and I’ve never seen any place that was so crazy for sports.

And, of course, the number one sport is hockey. And there’s only one team – the Oil.

(You know, I came very close to buying my own Oilers jersey … until I saw the price. Good grief! The NHL must be making a bundle!)

Hey, Bill, move to Toronto. Those jerks will never win the Cup again… :)

BTW, my word verification is nhlnf…strangely apropos.

At the risk of seeming really old, I was a kid living in Toronto last time those clowns won a Cup.
