For the birds
May 20th, 2007 by Bill
Am I becoming rather too preoccupied with the birds around this place? Perhaps. But there are a lot of birds here, after all.
And I’m finding them fascinating. This is probably due to the fact that where I was back in Edmonton there was not a great deal of bird activity beyond the magpies.
Here, it’s like a bird version of Times Square.
So of course I had to go out a get a bird feeder. If only to see what would happen. And of course what happened was exactly what you would expect would happen.
Birds arrived soon after it was hung up. So far it’s mostly black-capped chickadees and chipping sparrows. But who knows? Any moment now I could see warblers!
(As an aside - who names birds? A lot of the names seem damned silly, but then I ain’t no “birder.”)
This place here in Fredericton is also crazy with squirrels so I’m curious to see what they’ll do. Will they go off in a huff because there is no feeder for them? Will they trash the feeder like good-fer-nuthin’ young punks?
Maybe they’ll send around an Internet petition then get the government to force me to provide for them as well. After that, who knows? I may end up having to feed moose! And feral cats!
We’ll see, we’ll see …
